6. Stop smoking

Your chances of conceiving are cut by as much as 40 per cent if you're a smoker, according to research from The British Medical Association (2004). Smoking is thought to have a range of adverse effects on fertility including less eggs being available to be fertilized and damage to those that are present in the ovaries, reduced ovulation, "abnormal" functioning of the Fallopian tubes, a change in the reproductive hormones and a greater possibility of developing pelvic inflammatory disease, which can damage the reproductive organs and result in infertility. If you do conceive, there is a bigger risk that the pregnancy will end in miscarriage or be ectopic (growing outside of the womb).

Fertility tip: Quit smoking, period!
