Dirt that you can't see -- germs and bacteria -- can make you sick. And your hands are common transmitters. Fortunately, one of the best ways to fight them is also the simplest: Washing hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds to remove bacteria.
When washing your hands, pay attention to the areas underneath your fingernails and between your fingers, advises the National Restaurant Association.
Scrub up thoroughly both before and after preparing foods, using the bathroom, and after sneezing, coughing, smoking, eating or drinking.
