Pick up quality carbs

You can eat carbs and lose weight -- what matters most is the quantity and quality.

Load up on whole grain products, which are high in complex carbohydrates and minerals. Whole grains are also higher in fiber than refined grains. "That makes them more filling and satisfying, too," says Jane Kirby, R.D., co-author of Eat Up Slim Down. Refined breads, cereals, snack foods, candy, and soda, on the other hand, usually contain lots of added sugar.

"When buying breads and cereals, look to see that the first ingredient is a whole grain, such as wheat or oats," adds Kirby. And pass up those giant muffins and scones, which are loaded with fat. "If you can't resist, look for a smaller size."
