- Dark patches and freckles develop due to hyperpigmentation (increased melanin production or melasma) of the skin, and can be caused by excessive exposure to the sun or by taking certain medications such as birth control pills.
- Fix: Fade the darkened areas with a whitening or bleaching cream or gel that contains hydroquinone, kojic acid, or glycolic acid compounds. Follow with a light peel to uncover new skin cells. If you have a naturally dark skin tone, do be cautious with peels because they may cause further hyperpigmentation. Finally, protect your skin with sunblock to prevent dark spots from reemerging.
