| | 6 / 8 Is aspartame safe?
Aspartame is a sweetener used as a replacement for sugar in many foods, including diet sodas, sugar-free candies and low-fat yogurts. The American Dietetic Association released a report on sweeteners in 1993 stating the use of aspartame during pregnancy is safe. There's one caveat: Individuals with PKU, or phenylketonuria, who cannot properly metabolize phenylalanine should not consume this sweetener.
