Skin Problems
3. Blackheads (Open Comedones)
This problem occurs when sebum (oily substance naturally produced by sebaceous glands in the skin) dries and hardens before it reaches the skin surface, blocking the pore in the process. This dried plug of sebum and dead cells oxidize in the follicle, turn dark in color and become visible as little dark spots called blackheads (open comedones). Although blackheads can appear anywhere on the face, they are most commonly found on the oily T-zone area - nose, forehead and chin.
Exfoliating treatments (such as AHAs, BHAs, scrubs and microdermabrasion) are useful in clearing away existing blackheads and preventing the formation of new ones.
Blackheads can also be physically removed with a comdeone extractor/ remover which can be purchased at pharmacy stores - with clean hands, place the blackhead extractor over the comedone and press down firmly. If you prefer to have your blackheads extracted by a professional, book a facial appointment to let your facialist do it for you.
4. Acne
Acne is common during puberty and during times of stress, and is thus believed to be triggered by hormonal changes - notably the increase in the level of the hormone androgen results in excessive production of sebum by the sebaceous glands. This oily sebum blocks the pore, becomes inflammed with bacteria, and ultimately progresses into a pimple. It can be pretty tempting to try to pick at the zit, but refrain from doing so as it can leave scars. You can easily treat mild to moderate pimples or the occasional spot with over-the-counter acne medication, but if your acne condition is serious and involves large, painful lesions, it is best to see a dermatologist. Even when the breakout has cleared, do continue using a facial cleanser and moisturizer specially for oily and acne-prone skin to keep the acne under control.
5. Hyperpigmentation
Hyperpigmentation is the broad term used to describe the condition of sun spots, age spots, freckles and liver spots. Despite the different names given to the various types of dark spots, they are all essentially caused by the excess production of melanin in the skin, the pigment that gives our skin its color.
To get your skin radiance back, start on a skin brightening regime: invest in a skin lightening or whitening skincare range and be diligent about applying sunscreen daily.
