What are Free Radicals?
- Free radicals are the by-product metabolism - the oxidation of food by our body to produce energy. They can also be spawned by environmental factors such as smoking, radiation and pollution.
- These free radicals are unstable molecules with a missing electron, and will steal from any nearby molecule to get it. In the course of doing so, it triggers a chain reaction which results in new radicals formation, compounding the problem. The chief danger arises when they react with important cellular components such as cell membranes or DNA.
- The damaging effects of free radicals can contribute to premature aging and may be associated with conditions like cancer and heart diseases.
