Your newborn has arrived! You may feel overwhelmed by all the endless feeding, diapering and soothing, but you wouldn't trade this experience for anything else in the world. Your tiny baby will be needing an average of 15 to 18 hours of sleep per day! But her sleep is more like short naps than long stretches of sleep. She'll also need to feed often, so plan to nurse her every two to three hours. Because her head will be wobbly at first, always support her head when carrying her. Skin-to-skin contact is also very important: Gently caress, rock and kiss your newborn so she feels safe and loved.
For ages
0-3 MonthsPHYSICAL | Head control develops; attempts to lift head when lying facedown; responds to loud noises by blinking, startling, frowning or waking from light sleep; arm/leg co-ordination improves; able to focus on objects 8 to 15 inches away; grasps your finger; bats at objects. |
EMOTIONAL | Shows displeasure by crying (respond to her cries quickly -- it's impossible to spoil a newborn); smiles from around 6-8 weeks. |
SOCIAL | Recognizes your face; responds to your voice; blows bubbles, wiggles limbs when you talk or gently play with her; snuggles in your arms for comfort and security. |
