What is a Vaginal Yeast Infection?
Vaginal yeast infections (vaginal candidiasis) are caused by a fungus called Candida albicans. Yeast organisms are normally found in small amounts in the vagina, the mouth, the digestive tract, and on the skin without causing disease or symptoms. The acidic environment of the vagina helps keep yeast from over-growing. When the pH level inside the vagina is changed, balance between the normal microorganisms of the vagina can be upset. When the yeast population multiplies uncontrollably and gets out of balance with the other "normal flora", symptoms of yeast infection can result.
