Just when every consumer becomes aware of the benefits of making healthier choices in daily diet, some startling research findings show that some health food may not be as wholesome as you might think.

  • 1. Artificial Sweeteners.

    Many dieters are fervent fans of sugar substitutes. Because refined sugar adds empty calories without nutritional benefits, artificial sweeteners and sugar-free products have become a guilt-free alternative to indulge in sugar cravings for both low-calorie and low carb dieters.

  • Where's the Sin: The side effects of taking artificial sweeteners like saccharin and aspartame have been studied extensively for a few decades, yet the associated health risks remain a controversy still.

    Aspartame
    Surprisingly (perhaps not quite), research funded by the manufacturers themselves concluded that there are no adverse health effects from consumption of the sweetener, while some independent studies found over 90 different health-related side effects, including diabetes, cancer and seizures.

    Saccharin
    Various studies suggest that saccharin might be an animal carcinogen, with some tests showing a correlation between saccharin consumption and increased cancer (especially bladder cancer).

  • Alternatives: Honey is a natural sweetener with antioxidants, small amounts of amino acids, vitamins and trace minerals. Sweetening your beverages with honey offers a healthier option than refined sugar or artificial sweetener. However, if you absolutely have to take artificial sweeteners, use very sparingly.
