Treatment
If you suspect you may be suffering from generalised anxiety disorder, see your doctor early. Anxiety can be treated with conventional medications and psychotherapy as well as alternative approaches which have been shown to be effective. These include:- Relaxation Techniques
Relaxation techniques include deep breathing, progressive muscle relaxation and meditation. By putting your body at ease, the mind also becomes calm. - Distraction
When something starts to worry you, take your mind off it with some mental or physical activity. - Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy
Counselling is useful in helping people face up to their fears and find appropriate solutions. Psychotherapy and psychoanalysis concentrate on identifying buried conflicts and stresses that may be causing the anxiety. Behaviour modification, on the other hand, focuses on changing patterns of behaviour to help the patient avert anxiety or to cope better with it. Cognitive therapy similarly concentrates on changing ways of thinking. - Medication
This may be needed in severe cases.
