Veggie burgers are not always the healthier alternative to hamburgers. Yes, some are filled with beans, brown rice and mushrooms and can be healthy, "but others are loaded with sodium, preservatives and processed soy," says Palinski. Choosing them when eating out can be even more problematic. "Veggie burgers at restaurants tend to be cooked with butter or oil, which can greatly increase the calorie content," adds Dudash. With this in mind, what counts as a healthy veggie burger? "Aim to choose a vegetable burger which contains whole foods as ingredients and contains less than 200mg sodium, Palinski recommends.
