Diabetes Diet & Nutrition

Answers to your questions about diabetes diet and nutrition and more!

Counting carbohydrates

Keeping tabs on your carbohydrate intake can be very helpful, especially if you take diabetes medications or insulin. Aim to consume the same amount of carbohydrates at each meal or snack to ensure your blood sugar levels remains relatively stable.

Your doctor may also advise that you take 4-6 small meals instead of 3 large meals, so you can distribute your carbohydrates in small amounts throughout the day.

Opt for complex carbohydrates instead of refined carbohydrates to ensure an adequate intake of fiber, taking at least one serving of vegetables with lunch or dinner.

Sugar consumption

If your blood sugar is consistently under good control (4-8 mmol/L or 72-145 mg/dL), it is fine to take small amounts of sugar, but make sure the amount is minimal. However, if your sugar level is consistently high (greater than 10 mmol/L or greater than 180 mg/dL), you should avoid eating high-sugar foods.
