How high-protein diets work
High-protein/low-carb diets are based on the theory of eating more protein-rich foods and reducing the amount of carbohydrates you consume. This can lead to weight loss -- at least in the short term -- because protein makes dieters feel full longer, which curbs overeating, according to a recent study by researchers at the University of Washington School of Medicine.
Also, in cases when carbohydrates are severely restricted, the body enters a state called ketosis where it is forced to burn its own fat for energy. This change in metabolism can spur further weight loss.
