High-Carb Foods to Avoid
- Refined carbohydrates refer to foods which machinery has been used to remove the high fiber bits (the bran and the germ) from the grain. These include white bread, white rice, pasta and noodles.
- Sweetened drinks and syrup cocktails. To cut your sugar intake from beverages, avoid sodas, hot chocolate and sweetened ice tea. Fruit juices and canned fruits might seem like a healthy choice, but these are loaded with sugar too. If you want the goodness of fruits, prepare your own juice from fresh fruits.
- Cookies, cakes, muffins and doughnuts. The key ingredients in sugary baked goods are sugar and refined flour, which are exactly what you should avoid. Plus, these are often high in trans fat, which can lead to an increased risk for heart disease.
- Sweet snacks. Raisins, preserved apricots, dried cranberries are laden with sugar, period. So what if the labels say they're "100% organic"?
