Some are popular, some are plain bizarre. But do they really work?
The Apple Cider Vinegar Diet
What it involves:
Drinking between one and three teaspoons of apple cider vinegar before meals is supposed to cleanse the system, decrease appetite and encourage the body to burn more fat. An eating plan involving low-calorie meals sometimes runs alongside this.
Who follows it:
Fergie (of the Black Eyed Peas) and actress Megan Fox are both rumored to have adopted the apple cider vinegar diet to help them lose weight.
The bad points:
The high acid levels in apple cider vinegar can be dangerous to general health.
Expert view:
Mason says, "The apple cider vinegar diet is said to help you burn fat and reduce hunger and cravings. For this diet to be successful, it would need to be accompanied by an effective weight loss programme, which provides a well-balanced eating plan. Apple cider vinegar can cause damage to tooth enamel, the esophagus and the digestive tract, cause heartburn, indigestion and yeast infections in women, and adversely affect bone density and potassium levels."
